Online gambling is the use of a computer to play a variety of casino games, sports betting and virtual poker. These are often called “instant” games. The Internet has made it possible for people from all over the world to gamble online.

Online gambling is legal in several countries, including the US and Canada. It is also allowed in several Caribbean nations.

The most famous online gambling type is online poker. Poker players can compete in tournaments and play for cash prizes. Some online casinos offer “instant” games and others allow players to download software and play.

The United States Department of Justice announced that it would enforce the Wire Act of 1961 to prevent illegal online gaming. The government will seize assets in cases of online gambling violations.

In addition to federal law, many states also regulate gaming. Twenty states permit residents to wager on sports events online. Others have legislation that makes it illegal.

Generally, credit cards are used to make bets. However, other deposit methods are available.

The online gambling industry reached $830 million in 1998. Several companies, including Yahoo!, removed their advertisements for internet gambling.

Some countries are trying to regulate and tax online gambling. France, for example, proposed new laws to tax and regulate the internet gambling market.

Gambling is also legal in some provinces in Canada. But many countries have imposed restrictions on the use of the Internet. Nonetheless, more Americans are able to play their favorite casino games online.
