The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game of chance and skill. It is played by multiple players, with each player betting based on expected value of their actions and their knowledge of opponents. While the outcome of any given hand involves some luck, the majority of money placed into the pot is done so voluntarily by players making bets that they believe have positive expected value or are trying to bluff other players for various reasons.

The game is generally played with a minimum of 4 players, but can be played with as many as 14 players. Each player must ante something (amount varies by game, our games are typically a nickel), and then cards are dealt. After the initial deal, a round of betting begins and any player may choose to call a bet made by a previous player, raise the current bet, or fold. The highest hand at the end of the betting wins the pot.

The most popular hands include the royal flush, which consists of aces, kings, queens, and jacks in sequence and all the same suit. There is also a straight, which consists of five consecutive cards of different ranks, and one or more unmatched cards. Two pair consists of two distinct pairs of cards, and high card breaks ties. There are other types of hands, but these are the most common. Each hand is ranked in order of strength, so the highest ranked hand wins the pot.
