Is Online Gambling Safe?

Online Gambling involves betting or playing games of chance and skill for money, on a computer, mobile device, tablet or television via the Internet. It includes games such as online lotteries, casinos, sports betting and poker but does not include video lottery terminals (VLT).

Online gambling has become a global phenomenon that is growing rapidly in popularity. It is a fascinating interplay of technology, chance and human instinct. But is it safe? And how can trusted adults spot a young person who might be at risk of developing an unhealthy habit?

This article presents a synthesis of knowledge regarding risk and protective factors associated with online gambling. Risk factors include the individual’s psychological, relational and environmental characteristics, as well as co-occurring physical and mental health conditions that increase the risk of online gambling. A comparison of studies of nonproblematic and problematic online gamblers is also presented.

The most important protective factor is self-control, which is defined as the ability to resist impulsive urges and make wise decisions. This includes self-monitoring and setting goals. Other protective factors include social support, family relationships and healthy lifestyle habits. Gambling addiction can negatively impact one’s finances, relationships and overall mental health, and it is therefore important for people to seek professional help when they are experiencing problems. Signs that counseling is needed include an inability to control gambling behavior and a preoccupation with gambling. It is also important to seek counseling if a person starts to experience withdrawal symptoms or engages in deceitful behaviors to conceal their gambling activities.
