The earliest known form of poker was played with twenty cards. It is thought that the game was taught to French settlers in New Orleans by Persian sailors. Some believe it was developed from a Spanish primero game.<\/p>\n
Poker was popular during the American Revolution. During the Civil War, stud poker was introduced. A full 52-card English deck was added to the game after 1875. Several other poker variations have been created, including three-card brag. Today, three-card brag remains popular in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
After a dealer has shuffled the cards, they are dealt to each player one at a time. Cards may be dealt face down or face up.<\/p>\n
When all the players have checked, the betting round is finished. Each player has five cards and must use them to build their poker hand. One or more players remain in contention for the pot after the final betting round.<\/p>\n
If no one has the best hand, ties are broken by the highest card. The winner is the player with the highest unmatched fifth card.<\/p>\n
